MSc Health Operations – 2nd year

Course Introduction

In today's rapidly changing economic environment health organisations are increasingly implementing efficacious measures that are not solely based on outcomes, but utilise the metrics which other businesses, whether commercial or industrial define performance by.

Central to Health Operations is the identification of the clients' (usually patients) needs and the design and delivery of a service that will effectively and efficiently meet those needs. Hospitals across the world are now embracing techniques in process, scheduling and resource management which have been widely used in manufacturing organisations for many years as a way of improving the patient experience and ultimately the patient outcome.

The MSc in Health Operations provides a thorough understanding of these techniques and their application within hospitals and other health organisations. This enables students to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to overcome the complexity and challenges facing health organisations today.

The course is particularly suitable for medical and health professionals wishing to move into management in hospitals or healthcare organisations.

Course Structure

The course is divided into three core areas; eight modules contribute 40% of the marks, a group project contributes 20% of the marks, and an individual research project contributes 40% of the marks required to gain the award of MSc Health Operations from Cranfield University.

Eight compulsory modules (40% of award):

  • Module 1 – Organisational Operations
  • Module 2 – Research Design and Methodology
  • Module 3 – Statistical Analysis and Interpretation
  • Module 4 – Organisational Transformation and Change
  • Module 5 – Enterprise Modelling
  • Module 6 – Enterprise Systems
  • Module 7 – Business Management and Health Economics
  • Module 8 – Business Principles

For full module information visit the Cranfield University website.

Group project (20% of award)

This innovative learning approach allows the students to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the taught course to a live or simulated hospital/health related consultancy problem. The group project is carried out as a team effort whereby individuals contribute to the overall project and take responsibility for a particular area.

Individual project (40% of award)

A four month personal research project undertaken in industry or academia to allow each student to demonstrate their independent learning ability and interest in advancing their knowledge through the pursuit of independent research and/or development work in an area related to healthcare. The research project is undertaken either in a commercial company, public research facility, hospital or an academic facility.

During the research project you will be supported by your ICRI or Cranfield (for students studying in the UK) tutor.

Note: The Academic committee reserves a right to make changes in the syllabus as and when required.
