It is a regional airport development and "Regional Connectivity Scheme" (RCS) of the Government of India, with the goal of "Letting the Common Citizen Fly." The scheme aims to make air travel affordable and widespread and boost inclusive national economic development, job growth, and air transport infrastructure development in all regions and states of India.

UDAN ('UdeDeshka Aam Naagrik') is a first-of-its-kind worldwide initiative to promote regional connectivity through a market-based system, with 200 airports under construction that will require trained experts.
